Domotics in times of coronavirus

As a consequence of the coronavirus and the alarm state, we’re going to be spending more time at home than usual. In STEL Order we have decided to move, even if it is through this article, to a smart home.

We are sure that confinement in a smart house has to be, at the very least, much more interesting.

Every day more and more people are betting on the daily experience of living in a space that offers you almost everything you can imagine. Now that we can’t leave the house, let’s go into the interesting world of home automation and the professionals who make it possible.

1. What is domotics?

The present and future of our homes is presented to us as if taken from a science fiction film and each of us loves the idea of living in a smart home.

Domotics is the process of automation of a property. The approach to make an smart house is multidisciplinary and transverse, since elements of energy management, communication, security and accessibility, among others.

The technology we have integrated in our home increases its value, reinforces its security, and most importantly, maximizes our well-being at home.

2. Domotic in Spain

The construction sector in Spain has been the first to give us indicators that something is going very well or very badly in our country. With the crisis of 2008 and the fall in the real estate industry, unfinished buildings and their professionals were the ones who suffered the consequences of the recession.

But from 2008 until now, a lot has changed and technology has advanced a lot. Construction professionals have looked to the horizon with more technological, innovative and creative ideas.

The curve that represents the companies of control systems and automation, has risen vertically and without pause, since the year 2013.

Home automation begins by giving priority to the idea of comfort and well-being, in perfect harmony with everything around you.

It is, approximately, from the year 2016 when data processing and information is applied to add to the idea of sustainability, with an intelligent and responsible consumption of resources. In turn, in home automation, well-being is understood as access and security.

3. Domotic in times of coronavirus.

But overnight, a microorganism that we cannot see, but unfortunately we can perceive its consequences, has taken over the world and has almost completely stopped the system.

In Spain we have stopped the clock and, although it is temporary, we have had to do so from our homes, which before we barely had time to enjoy are now almost all we have to see.

And in this context we have asked ourselves, is confinement in an intelligent house the same thing? The answer is: no.

3.1. Energy saving

Saving on the electricity bill is not only achieved when the equipment installed is low consumption, it is achieved when we optimize resources efficiently and that is precisely what home automation achieves.

It is an intelligent management of lighting, air conditioning and household appliances, among others, which drastically reduces the electricity bill, by processing data of the owner’s consumption habits, we obtain information on what needs to be modified from their routine for the savings to be significant.

In times of coronavirus and staying at home, this information would help keep our bills optimized.

3.2.  Communications

With the COVID-19, television has broken the consumption record. The audience has reached 77% of the population and, if we add internet, streaming and video games, the average viewing time is 10 hours per viewer.

If we are at home we want to know, talk, watch, play and it is better if we have different ways to do it.

An intelligent house extends telecommunications throughout our home to enhance our leisure, the monitored control of our house and its services.

In the same way that the possibilities to communicate between people are extended, in the domotic house the communication with the devices is implemented. The remote control of the devices takes a leading role, in addition to generating a network of alarm transmission, intercommunication, remote assistance, or any device to send or receive messages with useful information of our day to day.

3.3. Security.

When we think of the safety of our homes, the first thing we imagine is a thief with a black mask and a bag on his shoulder to put all our things in.

Indeed, home automation has implemented motion sensors, cameras, surveillance system, intelligent lights and blinds that open or close automatically to make it appear that we are at home, even if we are on vacation.

Holidays are just the opposite of the situation we are living in right now, but intelligent houses have evolved beyond that and in the concept of security they include the monitoring of our health. This is interesting and now much more.

Home automation security systems aim to keep the home safe, as well as the people who live in it. The technology is developed and applied to prevent from thefts, gas leaks and fires. Tele-assistance and medical alert in the home has become very important in this segment.

3.4. Accessibility

The objective is that all people, including those who may have some kind of disability, can have the possibility of living in an environment that facilitates their autonomy. The general idea is to provide an accessible space for everyone, regardless of illness, age or disability, through state-of-the-art technology, design and creativity.

The idea is to turn our homes into functional and universal spaces by understanding the diversity of people, the different needs we may have.

3.5. Confort.

Within the comfort, the automation becomes stronger to achieve that all the elements of our home automation can be controlled from, for example, our mobile phone.

It is about controlling, from the palm of your hand, wherever you are, the air conditioning, the doors, the blinds, the irrigation, the video entry phone, the swimming pool (water filling, PH level, cover closing), the coffee machine and, in short, everything that includes domotic “intelligence”.

In this sense, to control with our voice several options, is already present.
